In the very very old days, people used to charge around in groups trying to beat their protein to death with big sticks or flint-tipped arrows before eating it mostly raw. Food hygiene was inversely linked with oral hygiene, and everything smelt really bad, tasted worse and even though it had teeth and claws and fought like a cornered wild animal (which it was) might still get to kill you even though it was dead and a sitting heavily on your stomach as your most recent meal.
